Artist Statement

Korey Friesen b. 1982 Russian Mennonite Canadian

Devoting myself to painting brought me great pleasure during a time I felt great emotional pain and trapped within my surroundings. Influenced by the intimate focus of Georgia O’Keefe's compositions, I painted portraits of flowers in bloom, suspending their fertile beauty in time and space by separating them from their surroundings. Inspired by Andy Warhol's portraits of pop icons, I painted the backgrounds in contrasting complementary colours so that each flower would pop and become its own local icon.

Developing an intimate relationship with the mundane beauty of life through art became key towards liberating me from limiting beliefs I once held. Through painting I have sharpened my intuitive powers, and developed a level of comfort with not knowing what will happen next, or what the final outcome will be. Through painting I have tapped into my own vision and perspective.
